Halpern & Associates Psychological Services

Psychologists are licensed health professionals, regulated by provincial statute and governed by the College of Psychologists of Ontario. Psychologists practice within the framework of the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA).

Halpern & Associates Psychological Services is a private practice of clinical psychologists who have extensive experience helping individuals, couples, and families who are seeking therapy and/or assessment services. We also consult to organizations that provide residential treatment services to children and adolescent. The practice was established in Cobourg (located in Northumberland County) in 1990. Surrounding communities that we serve include Port Hope, Bowmanville, Oshawa, Colborne, Brighton, Trenton, Campbellford, and Castleton. We have been at our current location, a comfortable and safe environment, since 1997.

Mental health problems are not uncommon, and affect individuals from all walks of life, and at all ages. We see children and adolescents, adults and seniors; sessions can be with individuals, couples or families. We work with a wide range of problems and symptoms, including trauma, stress, grief, depression, anxiety, and relationship difficulties. In addition, we provide support to encourage personal growth and development.

Psychotherapy might be offered in an individual, group, couple or family format, depending on the problem and whom it affects. Psychological therapy encompasses a variety of treatment methods intended to assist individuals to “work through” their concerns and problems, and consists of a collaborative relationship wherein clients and psychologist work in an active partnership to achieve certain goals.

Seeking help from a psychologist to overcome emotional or relationship problems, change behaviour, reduce symptoms, better understand one’s experiences, or facilitate recovery from life’s challenges, stresses and obstacles can provide a sense of mastery and contribute to psychological health.

We also provide assessments, including psycho-educational assessments to help clarify an individual’s learning style and potential, identify the presence of a learning disability or the possible reason(s) for academic struggles, and facilitate school planning.
